BTS RM and Jimin Listen to Solo Album and Have an Interview
BTS member RM has released his second solo album, ‘Right Place, Wrong Person,’ and spent some time with fellow member Jimin listening to his new songs.
On the 25th, a video titled ‘Exchange Album MMM (Mini &Moni Music) – RM’ was uploaded on the YouTube channel ‘BANGTANTV.’ RM released his second solo album, ‘Right Place, Wrong Person,’ at 1 PM on the 24th. This album comes 17 months after his first solo album ‘Indigo,’ which was released in December 2022.
Regarding the new album, RM said, “I think this album declares chapter 2 for RM as well. Everything has an expiration date, and this album shows exactly the side of me that I wanted to share.” Jimin commented on RM’s real personality, saying, “Namjoon hyung can be like an adult, but sometimes he’s more like a kid than I am. He’s meticulous yet clumsy, a true artist who shows his genuine self.“
Discussion on the New Song ‘LOST!’ and Album Creation
RM invited Jimin to his house to listen to his new album. RM jokingly said, “You’re going to the military soon, right? I wanted to play this album for you once before you go. Here it is!” Jimin compared RM’s title track ‘LOST!’ to Epik High’s ‘Music,’ saying, “It reminds me of listening to Epik High’s ‘Music.’ It suddenly brought back old memories.” RM responded, “The tempo is similar, isn’t it?“
‘Right Place, Wrong Person’ deals with moments of feeling like an outsider who doesn’t fit in. RM explained that he wanted to capture the universal emotions everyone feels at some point and deliver a message that resonates with those struggling to find answers. The album includes a total of 11 tracks, including the title track ‘LOST!’, ‘Right People, Wrong Place,’ ‘Nuts,’ ‘Out of Love,’ ‘Domodachi (feat. Little Simz),’ ‘? (Interlude),’ ‘Groin,’ ‘Heaven,’ ‘Around the World in a Day (feat. Moses Sumney),’ ‘??(Credit Roll),’ and ‘Come Back to Me.’ RM participated in writing all the lyrics for the album.
Explaining the album title, RM said, “It’s about being the wrong person in the right place. I think everyone has moments where they feel out of place. Actually, it might be that I’m the right person, but the place is wrong.” Jimin agreed, saying, “I think about this a lot too. Whose standards determine what is wrong?“
Military Enlistment and Future Concerns
RM discussed his song ‘Groin,’ saying, “People expect me to speak the truth and be outspoken. But I’m just a 29-year-old Korean man living a slightly different life. Haven’t we felt the weight of this over the past 10 years? We can’t just keep worrying about everyone else’s opinions.“
Talking about his military enlistment, RM shared, “We’ve suffered for a long time regarding military service. Even when I went to a bar, people would say, ‘Is that right for them?’ I had a lot of personal issues at that time, and I didn’t know what to do. So, I decided to be honest and pour it all out.” Jimin added, “Hyung had a lot to say to the members and fans and was under a lot of stress.“
Discussing ‘LOST!’, RM said, “It’s about people who have lost their way. I had a very dynamic 15 months. There was something happening to me every day. I thought I needed to be physically distant from the members to focus on myself.” Jimin replied, “The members wondered if Namjoon had become indifferent, but we knew how much he was struggling. How could he talk to us about it?“
Jimin shared his own experience, saying, “When I was working on my ‘FACE’ album, I told the members I felt lost, and they said, ‘We know. We just didn’t say anything.’ I thought our leader should be allowed to wander more.” RM reflected on ‘Indigo,’ saying, “I poured everything I felt while being in BTS into ‘Indigo.’ But after that, I had more things I wanted to say in my life.” Jimin noted, “‘Indigo’ felt like you were burying your feelings, but this album feels like you’re throwing them up. I felt the same with my ‘FACE’ album. It seems like your style is developing more.“
Relationship with BTS Members and Future Plans
RM opened up about the emotions he felt regarding BTS members’ military enlistment, saying, “Three members are left, and I wondered why I was still here. Watching Hobi leave, I had all kinds of thoughts. While working on the album, I wondered if I should be going too. But the album was already in progress, so I had to finish it. It felt relieving once it was completed.” Jimin added, “I could see RM was anxious, but I couldn’t tell him to open up.“
Jimin said, “The weight of being BTS’s leader is different. I learned a lot from watching hyung’s struggles, and it was heartbreaking to see his human side.” RM reflected, “I wonder why I always had to live so tensely. Whether on stage or behind the scenes, I was always nervous and cautious. I felt sorry for myself. I wanted to turn off the switch for a while. There’s no middle ground, BTS’s switch is either ON or OFF. I could do ‘RPWP’ because I’ve been with BTS for 10 years.“
When asked if he would be okay with the pressure starting again in 2025, RM answered, “I won’t be okay. But I think I’ll be stronger after releasing this. I need to figure out a way to keep performing and maybe mix up the units.” He expressed his hopes for the future, saying, “I want to do some concerts. We can keep mixing up the units.“
Discussing his post-military plans, RM said, “I think I’ll have to come back and contribute to the team again after my service.” When Jimin asked if RM had anything to say to himself six months later when this music is released, RM replied, “You were really struggling for a year. You lived intensely, and the you of then will be more beautiful than the you of now. Keep fighting.”
