G-Dragon Appointed as Visiting Professor at KAIST…Leading the Convergence of Science, Technology, and K-Culture
Singer G-Dragon (real name Kwon Ji-yong) has been appointed as a visiting professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at KAIST (Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology). For the next two years, he will conduct leadership lectures for undergraduate and graduate students and lead various joint research projects to promote the convergence of science, technology, and K-Culture.
KAIST announced on the 5th that Kwon Ji-yong has been appointed as a visiting professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering. The appointment ceremony took place in the morning at the KAIST Sports Complex during the ‘Innovate Korea 2024’ event. This appointment aims to integrate KAIST’s cutting-edge science and technology with K-content and cultural industries to enhance the global competitiveness of Korean culture.
Kwon Ji-yong will give leadership lectures to both undergraduate and graduate students at KAIST, sharing his experiences as a world-renowned artist. Through this, students are expected to gain vision and insight into the world, receive inspiration and challenges to pioneer their own fields. Additionally, Kwon Ji-yong plans to host various cultural events to communicate with KAIST members and provide the artistic experiences necessary for growing into creative and integrated talents.
KAIST and Kwon Ji-yong plan to establish the ‘KAIST-Galaxy Corporation EnterTech Research Center’ within the Department of Mechanical Engineering. This center will conduct research on Digital Twin technology, convergence studies combining K-Culture with AI, robotics, and the metaverse, and develop differentiated artist avatars using the latest technologies such as volumetric capture, motion capture, and haptic technology.
Galaxy Corporation, Kwon Ji-yong’s agency, expects this appointment to contribute to market innovation and the global expansion of K-Culture through EnterTech R&D. Galaxy Corporation has produced high-profile broadcast content such as ‘Physical: 100 Season 2’, ‘Street Woman Fighter’, and ‘Mister Trot 2’. Recently, they expanded their IP across entertainment fields by bringing in G-Dragon.
Expressing his feelings about the appointment, Kwon Ji-yong said, “I am honored to be appointed as a visiting professor at KAIST, which has produced numerous scientific geniuses. I look forward to creating a significant synergy, or a ‘big bang,’ by combining my expertise in entertainment with the best scientific experts.” He added, “I also hope to communicate more closely with my global fans, who I can’t often meet, through AI avatars.”
KAIST President Lee Kwang-hyung stated, “KAIST has always explored new things and pioneered unknown territories since its establishment. Professor Kwon, as a pioneer who has achieved global success in the cultural and artistic fields, shares the DNA of KAIST.” He expressed his expectations, saying, “Professor Kwon’s activities will not only contribute to the global expansion and growth of KAIST’s science and technology in K-Culture but will also be a valuable asset to KAIST members aspiring to be a world-class university.”
Kwon Ji-yong’s term as a visiting professor will last from June 4, 2024, to June 2026. He will also serve as a global ambassador for KAIST, helping to strengthen KAIST’s overseas promotion.
This appointment is receiving attention as an important attempt to enhance the global competitiveness of K-Culture through the convergence of science and technology with entertainment and to pioneer new content markets.
