SHINee Confesses “We Didn’t Like ‘Ring Ding Dong’ at First” on ‘How Do You Play?’
The group SHINee revealed that they initially disliked their mega-hit song ‘Ring Ding Dong’. On the May 25th episode of MBC’s ‘How Do You Play?’, SHINee members appeared as guests for the ‘Nolmu Festival’.
Behind the Scenes of Their Hit Songs
SHINee looked back on their performances of hit songs like ‘Replay’, ‘Love Like Oxygen’, ‘Ring Ding Dong’, ‘Juliette’, ‘Lucifer’, ‘Sherlock’, and ‘View’, sharing behind-the-scenes stories from their promotions.
Recalling the era of their debut song ‘Replay’, which sparked a skinny jeans trend nationwide, SHINee mentioned, “As the response was great, our pants kept getting tighter. Eventually, they were almost like leggings.” Reflecting on their passionate and energetic performances during their rookie days, Key said, “Our hair and makeup artists and managers told us that we didn’t have to perform like it was the actual broadcast during camera rehearsals, but we still did the same thing three or four times.”
Minho added, “After practicing that song for more than two months, we couldn’t do it lightly. Our bodies could only go at 100%. Every rookie probably feels that way. Sometimes I want to go back to that time. It would be fun to promote for a week or two with the same energy we had back then.”
First Impressions of ‘Ring Ding Dong’
Regarding ‘Ring Ding Dong’, known as a “forbidden song” for exam takers, the members confessed, “We really hated ‘Ring Ding Dong’ at first. The SHINee we imagined was fresh and youthful, but this song didn’t feel like us. However, it turned out to be a huge success.”
For ‘Lucifer’, they mentioned, “People say it’s the song that made Jeon Hyun-moo famous. Hyun-moo still says it helped his career a lot. We benefited a lot from it as well.”
Favorite Songs and Pride in Their Performances
When asked about their favorite songs, the members found it hard to choose just one. Key selected ‘Sherlock’ and ‘View’, Onew and Minho also chose ‘View’, while Taemin picked ‘Don’t Call Me’. They explained that ‘View’ showed that SHINee could still explore new styles even after many years in the industry. “It was like taking a different path but eventually returning to our own,” they said.
The ‘How Do You Play?’ members, watching the videos, marveled, “You guys worked so hard. There was no break.” SHINee responded, “We have no regrets about our performances. We were always sincere. Whatever hardships we faced outside, we wanted to own the stage. We fought fiercely and did our best. While our past selves might seem embarrassing, we have no embarrassment when it comes to our performances.”
With a wealth of hit songs under their belt, anticipation is high for what kind of performances SHINee will bring to the ‘Nolmu Festival’.
