Simultaneous Filming of ‘Squid Game’ Seasons 2 and 3 Completed, Fans’ Anticipation Soars
The global hit series ‘Squid Game’ has completed the simultaneous filming of seasons 2 and 3, significantly heightening the anticipation of fans worldwide. According to a recent OSEN report, the actors and staff of the Netflix series ‘Squid Game’ wrapped up nearly 11 months of filming without any major incidents.
The filming of the new seasons began last February with the recruitment of supporting actors in South Korea. After test filming for season 2, the main shooting commenced in July. To celebrate the completion, the cast and crew enjoyed a two-day wrap party in Gapyeong on the 11th and 12th, engaging in water leisure activities and a barbecue party.
Notably, the first season of ‘Squid Game,’ released in September 2021, created a global phenomenon, generating approximately $900 million (about 1.2 trillion KRW) in economic value. Furthermore, the series made history at the 2022 Emmy Awards, with director Hwang Dong-hyuk winning Best Director and Lee Jung-jae winning Best Actor, among a total of six awards. This marked the first time a non-English language series won in these categories, a historic achievement for Asia as well.
Given that seasons 2 and 3 have already been filmed, they will be released sequentially. Although an exclusive OSEN report last year revealed the simultaneous production of seasons 2 and 3, Netflix initially denied this, stating they were focused solely on season 2 and that simultaneous production was not confirmed. However, multiple sources have since confirmed that both seasons were filmed together, effectively creating a long narrative that will be divided into two seasons.
Season 2 will consist of six episodes, with season 3 planned to have a similar number of six to seven episodes. This format is reminiscent of the successful Netflix series ‘The Glory.’ Consequently, the gap between the release of seasons 2 and 3 is not expected to be long.
Netflix stated, “We are currently in the final stages of preparation for the release of season 2 and are working hard,” but refrained from providing specific details about season 3, saying, “It’s not the right time to discuss it.”
In season 2, Seong Gi-hun (played by Lee Jung-jae), who abandoned his flight to the United States, re-enters the game, and the mysterious Front Man (played by Lee Byung-hun) reveals his identity. Other new characters with intriguing backstories will also be introduced, including Wi Ha-joon, Gong Yoo, and others. The cast includes Im Si-wan, Kang Ha-neul, Park Gyu-young, Lee Jin-wook, Choi Seung-hyun (T.O.P), and more, generating much buzz.
However, T.O.P’s casting has sparked controversy due to his previous drug charges, leading to criticism that the series is facilitating the return of a criminal.
‘Squid Game’ season 2 is set to be released in the second half of 2024. Fans are eagerly awaiting the unfolding of the new storylines in seasons 2 and 3.
