During the photoshoot, an interview was also conducted. Leader Jung Sun-hye said, “With our second EP ‘XXL’, we showcased YOUNG POSSE’s intense charm. Next, we want to challenge ourselves with laid-back yet groovy hip-hop.” Wi Yeon-jeong added, “We want people to see our performances and feel like dancing and having fun with us.”
“The Daughter of Korean Hip-hop”, YOUNG POSSE
YOUNG POSSE is recognized for their music that embodies the authenticity of hip-hop. Unlike other girl groups that partially incorporate hip-hop elements into K-pop, YOUNG POSSE stays true to the essence of hip-hop music.
YOUNG POSSE’s representative track ‘YOUNG POSSE UP’ features collaborations with rappers Verbal Jint, NSW Yoon, and Token. This track showcases the Jersey Drill genre without any modifications, highlighting sound production that stays true to hip-hop fundamentals.
Their second mini-album, <XXL EP>, expands their exploration of various genres. The album includes ‘Scars’ in the Rage genre founded by Playboi Carti, ‘My Name Is’ featuring soulful chipmunk sampling reminiscent of Kanye West, ‘Skyline’ which blends Drum and Bass with Jersey Club popularized by NewJeans in Korea, and ‘DND’ which adopts the Afrobeat genre. This album impressively curates the past and present of hip-hop while embracing trends in Western pop.
Title Track ‘XXL’ Enthralls Old-School Hip-hop Fans
The title track ‘XXL’ is an homage to ‘Come Back Home’ by Seo Taiji and Boys, pioneers of gangster rap in Korea. It is a traditional boom bap track with a different kind of intensity compared to BLACKPINK’s ‘Pink Venom.’ The arrangement, which vividly captures the texture of boom bap sound, and the catchy old-school style hook are particularly impressive. These elements have earned YOUNG POSSE the title ‘The Youngest Daughter of Korean Hip-hop’ from old-school Korean hip-hop fans.
Meanwhile, YOUNG POSSE’s photoshoot and interview can be found on the official DAZED website and social media channels.
